    The winners of the BBC Music Awards 2016 were revealed during a live star-studded show from the ExCel, London and was on the red carpet.

    Hosted by Fearne Cotton, Claudia Winkleman and Gemma Cairney, the musical extravaganza took place in front of a live audience and broadcast to millions on BBC One and, and the show will be broadcast on BBC America on 15 December.

    Jammed with breathtaking performances from some of the biggest names in the international music scene, five awards were given out on the night.

    BBC Radio 2 Album of the Year was won by Adele – 25. As Adele was unable to collect her prize in person, her prize was presented by Matt Goss and Lulu and was accepted on her behalf by Robbie Williams.

    Adam Lambert and Rebecca Ferguson presented the prize of BBC Music British Artist of the Year, which was won by Coldplay. They’re currently on tour so accepted their prize as they walked onstage at the Etihad Stadium, Melbourne, Australia, with Chris Martin saying: 
    “Hello BBC Music Awards, Fearne and Claudia, we are Coldplay and we just got told about winning this beautiful BBC Artist of the Year award. Sorry we’re not there, we are about to go on stage in Australia. Look at all those people and we love you and we are so grateful and we’ll see you so soon. Thank you so much and goodbye.”

    As previously announced, the BBC Music Introducing Artist of the Year was awarded to Izzy Bizu, presented by Fearne Cotton. 

    BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge Performance of the Year was won by The 1975 Live Lounge Symphony performing What Makes You Beautiful (One Direction cover). The band accepted their prize from Rick Astley and Pixie Lott.

    The fifth and final award of the evening, Song of the Year was won by Adele for Hello. Geri Horner presented the award. With four awards, Adele now becomes the most decorated recipient of BBC Music Awards in the show’s three year history. Last year Adele was crowned British Artist of the Year in the first of her double honours of the night, as revealed by Rod Stewart. Queen's Brian May announced her second gong: BBC Live Performance of the Year for Adele at the BBC, A BBC One Special.

    Adele, texting her thanks in her absence, said:
    “Hello again. I’m so sorry I’m not there. I’ll be home soon and I can’t wait. It’s been a long year on the road and this makes me a little less homesick. I can’t wait for Wembley and then to get back to normal. Special thanks to all my fans for voting for the song, you are all amazing. Merry Christmas. Love Adele.”

    The shortlisted songs for BBC Music Awards 2016 Song of the Year were those which have received the most airplay across the BBC’s pop music radio networks over the last 12 months as compiled for the BBC by PPL were:
